Prison Ministry team members voluntarily enter the Lockhart Management & Training (MTC) Facility for TDCJ on the third Sunday of each month. This minimum-security unit has capacity for about 1000 female inmates. Activities include Worship and Bible Class in the morning and Mentoring in the afternoon.
Worship and Bible Class are very similar to those at Cameron Road with minimal adaptations to the environment. Mentoring is an opportunity to meet with our team to discuss concerns the inmates have and preparation for life after release. Some gather in groups and some meet one-on-one. Group meetings are necessary to allow all the attendees to meet with the team.
We prepare a 20-page handout with a different theme each month. Relevant articles are included as well as puzzles, bookmarks, and a monthly calendar. We also distribute some commercially printed inspiration literature.
Volunteers for the team must complete the TDCJ background check and training to understand rules and precautions. Then we make arrangements with the Unit Chaplain for the new volunteer to participate in our activities.
Our team has been visiting Lockhart since the unit opened in 1993. All team members grow spiritually through this experience. We carry God’s Word hoping the ladies will allow it to impact them for a better future. For more information, please contact us.
